Staying Sane During Standardized Testing
It is unfortunate that our educational system bases so much on standardized testing. Due to the emphasis placed on these tests, it can get a little crazy in the classroom. Kids and teachers alike can stress out about these tests. I think the most important thing as teachers is to keep the kids as relaxed as possible. Try not to make these tests seem so important and for lack of a better word "scary". Also, teachers and administration should remember to keep an eye on each other and provide encouragement to those who look like they need it. The government is not going to change their views of these tests anytime soon, so all we can do is work together to make the process as smooth and comforting as we can.

We recently finished our batch of standardized testing at our school. We take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and I happen to teach in the grade which has the most test in the school--oddly enough it is third grade. My poor kiddies were so "tested-out" that we used to take breaks every day. My teaching partner loves to sing and dance and let loose, so together we would take our third graders outside and lead them in some fun! Sometimes little things like that can get their energy out and their minds refocused. Standardized tests sure are tough on them, but like you said, they're not going anywhere soon!
